Previously, Michael was the Practice Manager of Management Toolbox Ltd, a successful team of organisational engineers, who have now formed Grant Thornton New Zealand’s new Business Transformation service. For the 15 years prior he was with the New Zealand Dairy Board/Fonterra, where he gained extensive experience across a number of disciplines including:

  • Productivity improvement: Michael leads Grant Thornton’s practice in this area, which works to find the true value that comes from eliminating waste, improving work flow and understanding customer value. He is skilled in quality system thinking, root cause analysis, lean thinking, SPC and Bevington’s XeP3 method suite.
  • Procurement: He has project managed many large procurement projects. In one cost out programme he led for a large manufacturer, savings targets were exceeded delivering a multi-million dollar bottom line result. He also conducts strategic procurement reviews and consults on the formation of supplier partnerships and collaborative relationships.
  • Supply chain management: Michael has negotiated supply chain agreements, developed pricing methodologies, and managed planning, forecasting and implemented SKU rationalisation. He had hands-on involvement in the implementation of the changes required for the fundamental redesign of a supply chain into an SAP environment.
  • Business growth: He’s had involvement in the implementation of strategic plan development, value proposition analysis, business case preparation, financial modelling and delivering proposals to boards and venture capitalists.

Michael’s collaborative style has been effective in growing and advising businesses in several countries in sectors such as food and beverage, pharmaceutical, sports nutrition, textiles, manufacturing and government.

Outside Interests

When Michael is not at work he enjoys spending time with his young family – especially watching his kids play a variety of sports.
