Mark joined Grant Thornton in 2009 having spent the previous three years working in London closely monitoring all the activities of the International Accounting Standards Board and XBRL International. His last 18 years have been spent working full-time on either creating, interpreting or commenting on internationally recognised standards in three business reporting domains: IFRS, XBRL and audit.

He has worked with many different types of New Zealand reporting entities, operating all sectors of the economy, to help them efficiently and effectively resolve complex business reporting issues in areas such as revenue recognition, business combinations, asset impairment, financial instruments and tax. To support the many publications and articles he has either authored or reviewed, Mark has presented on almost every aspect of financial reporting in New Zealand to a wide range of audiences, both local and overseas.

Mark has an excellent understanding of New Zealand's financial reporting requirements and the needs of users having previously been the Deputy Chair of the Financial Reporting Standards Board of the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants and the Chairman of XBRL New Zealand.

Outside interests

Mark loves to travel with his family to all parts of the world to experience first-hand different cultures and to learn more about their history.  He also has a keen interest in music, film, wine tasting and a wide range of both winter and summer sports.
